Byalah: A Mythical Guardian Creature
In front of the pagodas in Myanmar there are stucco lions that guard the entrances but our cousins, the Rakhines, who live on the western seaboard have their own special guardians.The Rakhine have a fierce looking creature all of their own, unknown elsewhere in the world or even in other parts of Myanmar. They are seen carved in stone in many pagodas in more forms than one, their stylized design blending in well with the traditional architecture.
